*Phone Call Home! Montreal or Bust! Left the MTC - got up at 2:30am - flying to Detroit and then arriving in Montreal!

Phone Call Home!

I get a little bit of time to email today to tell you what will happen tomorrow. I cannot believe the time here went so quickly! But this is truly the life I am so excited and so ready for what is to come in montreal I know that it will be hard but I have waited for it all my life. I am excited for everything! I know there will be disappointments I know that it will be the hardest thing I ever do I know that there will be days where it will be so hard to keep going. But I have been called of God and there are people there that need me and I will not fail them. Heavenly Father wouldnt ask me to do something if he knew that I could not accomplish it to the extent that he needed. I am ready for for the failure and the hardships because I know that no matter what it will be okay! I love you so much mother thank you for all that you have done for me to get me here. I got to be interviewed by one of the branch presidency members before he left and he is such a sweet old man. One of the questions was " Is your family supportive of you here?" I went on for probably 5 minutes about how much you had done for me and how you were missionaries and so many things and how you had blessed my life here. He could see the genuine love and appreciation in my voice and he said that I had been blessed with such an amazing family. I agreed with him 100 percent. You are truly amazing mother. So tomorrow will go as follows!

- I will be getting up at around 2:30 and I will be at the travel office at 3:30 from there we will take a bus to the airport and it will probably take about an hour or so. After this ( around 4:30) we will check our bags and go through security to our gate. I am not sure how long this will take but probably 45 minutes to an hour as I am also waiting for the other missionaries flying with me. So that puts as at about 5:30 and My plane leaves at around 7:40 i believe so I will be calling you between 5:30 and 7:00 tomorrow morning my time. I can technically talk as long as I want but we were told to respect the time of other people so I can probably talk around 30-45 minutes. Who knows maybe less it all depends on the timing and the availability of phones. I will then fly from Salt Lake to Detroit Which will take 5 or 6 hours i cant remember and normally I would call you there but I only have an hour layover.. so I don't think I will have enough time to call you again. But from Detroit we take a 2 hour flight to Montreal and then my life starts for 2 years! This is as much information as I can give you you're probably asleep but I will be emailing for the next 10 minutes if you have anymore questions. So just keep your phone on and be prepared I dont know exactly when i will call you. Love you mom!

- Elder Masse'

(9/29/15 - side note from Mom: When Elder Masse called us- he said his testimony in Spanish - and he sounded happy and excited.  He talked of a devotional he gave last night with everyone in their district where he gave each of the Elders qualities like "a strong testimony", and "strong".  He said he couldn't sleep last night and didn't go to bed until 11:30pm - so he was pretty tired!  One of his bags was 50 pounds and 51 pounds.  Perfect!  He said Elder Vanaquer (Van-a-ker) was with him and about 14 other missionaries going to Montreal.)

September 25, 2015 - I'll get to talk to you in just a few days! 4 days until leaving for Montreal!!! -accidentally switched the words: " physically pure" and they said " physically mashed potatoes", I am so excited for the cold and the people and the food!!!!!!!!,

Elder Walker & Elder Masse - Provo Temple

I loved your letter it was of great comfort to me! I am not scared to go to montreal i am so excited I know that so many amazing things await me there and I am ready for my next adventure. I know it will be hard I think the french especially but I wouldnt be going there if the lord didnt know I could do it!

1) I am leaving on the 29th and my plane leaves at 7:50ish so i will board at like 7 but i will get to call you so i am not sure when that will happen.. but it will happen! so yeah I will be getting to call you in a couple days just be prepared its going to be early and I dont have any more information on what will happen that day! and yes my mission ends the 1st of august also I received money for my luggage so its all good but i cannot get a refund for the money it took to get here i believe. That is what i was told.

2) no haha the only fear is that my bags wont get there other than that I have been sufficiently prepared and I have never had a problem with luggage!

3) umm.. there has been some funky stuff like a toy cat paw thing and a bowling ball kit, candy i cant even name everything super old stuff that has been there for years!

4) a) there are devotionals every tuesday and sunday on tuedsays its usually a general authority and on sunday its just a "regular" speaker they are both amazing! after sundays we get to watch films or other talks and those are always amazing this is where I got to watch character of christ and many other amazing talks given at the MTC. Other than this its in the gym and there are like 3000 missionaries so it is super packed! most of them do choir so choir is always amazing and i have never been in a choir so big!

b) just a bunch of dell computers and a big printer there are dividers and everyone is typing as fast as they can to get as much emailing time in their hour. i can take a picture!

c) Laundry room is really hot and always always super busy everyone is always doing laundry this comes from having 3000 missionaries all trying to do laundry at once so there are just a million washers and dryers going at all times.

5) I love at all temples i am biased though because of how big and beautiful the portland temple is. I really like the waterfall and the endowments rooms are beautiful. I also really like the celestial room but still portland will always be in my heart.

6) everything and everyone! I accidentally switched the words for charity and chastity in a lesson so we talked about charity the entire time then i invited them to live with more chastity in their life which was funny!! later 2 missionaries talking about chastity said some words wrong as well.. and well it just went down hill they meant to say " physically pure" and they said " physically mashed potatoes" or something like that so that was similarly pretty funny! Other than this elder hopkins and elder vanaquer fill my life with smiles and laughter! I love them so much i will miss them.

7) What dont i love about aiden and camdeyn! I  miss my two little brothers! i miss their hugs and playing games with them and taking them to taco bell I miss our little adventures and sleeping in the same room with them. I miss camdeyns cleverness and jokes and his huge hugs! I miss aidens tenderness and wrestling and his laugh! I love my little bros!

8) umm.. how long and fast the last week would go. this was a pretty standard week there was some differences but it felt so long.. But now its already friday and it doesnt make sense! i feel like i just got here yesterday and I am already leaving..

9) I am so excited for the cold and the people and the food!!!!!!!! I AM SO HAPPY ah just so stoked for everything i cannot express my excitement! also the opportunity to sleep on the plane haha.. this will be the last time i get an opportunity to sleep! I cannot wait!!!! ahh and the french and to practice spanish all of it!

this is marco! i love him

elder delgado ( pointing i love him! ) and elder hunt smiling -- elder hopkins and other elder hunt in the back

that studying life

I am so great the MTC has gone by with ease more or less nothing is particularly hard here. once you get used to the schedule everything is a breeze I am excited for new food though! As far as the MTC goes a lot of things the people the teachers and the investigators we teach here i will miss everyone in my district when they leave i have really grown to love them and i will miss their companionship! It will be weird walking around and not being surrounded by thousands of missionaries but this is the life and i am so excited for montreal!

I dont think i need anything else i got your 2 packages and i think thats all i needed i will be sending a box home soon with everything i dont need in it i am sending home my one suit because its too small and i can already feel it gettings smaller. and i am running out of time to get stuff anyways i only have 11 days left here! i will get my flight plans soon and i will tell you as soon as i can.

Umm other people see me as a missionary a lot of people view me as a mediator. the teacher took me aside and said that for the trio i was the one that had to make the balance between everyone. So i am truly a missionary now i am a hard worker and i am always focused and i am a strictly obedient missionary. Elder Vanaquer said that i looked 18 but i acted much older if that is any indication as well. I have definitely grown as a missionary here i know that what i will face in montreal will be totally different than here but still i have learned so much here i dont even know how i have been able to handle it. I have learned a lifetime of knowledge and i have only been here a month.

Umm i dont want to forget all the service i was able to give elder vanaquer ( i will explain in my weekly update) other than that i am "packing" and deciding on stuff i will and wont need here. Other than this also hemming my pants! the hemming came out in my grey pants and so i had the opportunity to take out my needle and thread and fix them WOO! you cant even really tell i did it so i dont think i did too bad of a job! other than this.. this week was just pretty normal! OHH actually the tuesday devotional. elder vanaquer speaks english rather fluently but he still has problems with it so this week he got a translator headset but decided he didnt want it! so i ended up taking it and listening to the entire devotional in french and i got alot of it but still.. totally not ready for montreal it was really cool just to hear french though! I think all the time 24/7 about montreal and the people and my companion there are so many things i dont think i could name half the things i think about i think alot about how i could share the gospel with my non-lds friends at home and how i can do better and i am constantly studying so basically spanish and the gospel are always on my mind.

I miss the rain. this week it rained really hard for 2 days and it was heavenly i never thought i would miss the rain because it was something that i had become so familiar with but i  miss the smell and the feel and so it was really nice that it rained this week. also the green of oregon! but all these things will come as i go to montreal. other than this.. i have tried not really to miss anything... well its music there is so much peace and solace in music so this is something too but c'est la vie.

I dont think i could come up with any reason not to love you mother. You save my skin out here missionaries come out here with nothing unprepared and not ready for what is ahead of them. Because of you i am ready, i dont have to worry about not having enough stuff or toiletries or if my pants rip. you taught me everything i need to know about being a good missionary i am so ready for what is to come and i am so happy! i get so many letters and packages and i feel so loved and that is a big thing out here a lot of people dont get these gifts and they feel so lonely but i know there is always someone looking out for me and this is you mother. I love you.

Cool stuff about this week -- so i got to see gordon as he said in his email! loved this i will really miss elder walker when i leave he is my last connection to home! but at one point or another you have to say goodbye. so this was sunday and there was a devotional so that was cool!

umm monday elder vanaquer starting getting really sick and i kept telling him to go to the doctor but he wouldnt so I went to the store and i bought him medicine.  so i am very thankful to grandma also for this for giving me the money to be able to do this. So i did this and when we woke up  tuesday it was even worse! so we spent 5 hours in the dorm while he slept and i got to personal study which was really nice and it was so good just to be of service to him. wednesday he kept getting worse and worse until finally he said he needed to go to the doctor so i ended up spending 6 hours with him in the "sick bay" watching over him and bringing him medicine and i got to go get him lunch and bring it to him and i also payed for his medicine and medical fees which were like $20 ( and he told me not to do it because he felt bad) but i did it anyways because i knew that he didnt have any american money to pay for this. So this was so nice to just personal study and be of service to him and help him get better! he said he wants me to get sick so that he can help me out haha. But also my favorite experience in all this was probably friday to saturday night. -- as a missionary you do not have very much.. one of things that means most to you is a warm bed and a pillow. Well it has been relatively cold here and elder vanaquer has been freezing and as you know i am a ball of heat so honestly nothing meant more to me this past week than the moment that I gave up the 1 blanket i had so that he could be warm. that night i slept better here than any other night. I absolutely adore elder vanaquer.

-- investigator -- so we get to do TRC investigators and most of them are members but some of them arent and our investigator for our stay at the MTC was Marco and he has polio and i love him so much we committed him to baptism and taught him all the lessons and when everything was over and done with and we told him that we were leaving soon and couldnt teach him anymore he testified to us about loving the language to learn it and we took a picture with him and he cried! best day every! buuuuut also i didnt get an opportunity to teach him one last time because we went one splits and so i taught another investigator BUUT i committed her to baptism and it was a very good lesson as well! I went with Elder stepp who is the real ladies man of our group! it was fun to get to know him.

-- other than this it was just a great week of service i had an amazing week! the only other thing i can think of is again about elder vanaquer! so as you know all i have wanted is peace from everything and in life and in elder Vanquers patriarchal blessing it says that on his mission that he will bring his companions peace because he is always a holder of peace. I have grown to love him so much and i will miss him when we part ways in 11 days. other than this just running out of time and i am trying to learn spanish as much as possible! it has been an amazing week! ALSO elder vanaquer is the best dancer every and he is really flexible and really good at handstands ( like he can do pushups while doing a handstand) so i have been practicing and i have gotten 30 seconds which is not bad but i am getting better!

elder vanquer is with me until next week then i am again in a trio with him and hopkins again so all is well! also my entire life everyone has called me masse and here everyone is like YO ITS ELDER MASSA like how you are supposed to pronounce it and its really cool - we got a new district 2 weeks ago and they are they best i absolutely love them!

OHHH YEAHHH okay so there is this chocolate that elder vanaquer really misses and i have the name.. Cote d'or - almond and salt other than this there is nothing else you have already given so much!-- this is his favorite chocolate and nothing would mean more to him than getting this

anyways I LOVE YOU ALL have a great week!
love you mom have a good week!

Sept 11, 2015- Day 24! MTC, i finished the book of mormon in the email.. it took me 2 weeks roughly i have never read it so fast in my life... , hand stand contests, sand volleyball, pinkie is healed with a big scar, I have never been happier in my life,

Elder Tate Masse & Elder Gordan Walker

Area: Provo MTC
Companion: Elder Corentin Vanaquer (from France)

I am here ma mere!

dont worry,  I am great.

I have (been getting your packages and dear elders) there are like 2 more things i need but i have been so perfect i will be sending alot of stuff home haha

i left my camera in the apartment... so you may not get pictures this week

umm.. everything that i packed thus far! I have used almost everything that i thought i would i cant think of anything i havent used! i will need to buy scripture cases for my spanish scriptures but i will do that at the MTC and i am also going to send home the bible that was inscribed i think.. i should have listened to devin because its true i got the exact pair for free... and they are identical. we will see i will probably keep the inscription and send home my spanish ones that arent engraved.

finger is perfect never better completely healed

no BUTTTT i forgot to say i finished the book of mormon in the email.. it took me 2 weeks roughly i have never read it so fast in my life...
-------------

1- I have spiritual experiences every day! between the gift of tongues and promptings from the spirit! there are so many things that happen everyday! for instance elder vanaquer lost his card and he needs it to get around the MTC and to eat etc. and I had a prompting to look inside his planner which doesnt even make sense and that is where it was!

Another time I forgot to set the alarm and i woke up from my dream but I just tried to fall back asleep and I was prompted to get up and look at the clock and at first i didnt want to because i knew that the alarm hadnt gone off but I decided to listen to the prompting and it was exactly 6;30 which is when the alarm was supposed to go off! there are so many tender mercies out here in the mission field.

2) I thought that i was getting a new elder this week BUT it turned out there was a switch in the office and so i ended up staying with elder vanaquer ( which i am so happy about i love him so much!) and elder hopkins went with elder hunt. I was sad to see him go but we will be together again for the last like 7-9 days here.

3) I didnt actually get to do that this week which was sad but i am for sure doing it next week which i am excited for! we got 8 new elders in our zone on wednesday and its funny because almost all of them are older than me 19-20 but they still looked shell shocked i feel as if i have been here for so long.

4) The best part? I dont know haha.. thats like whats the best part of being a mother? the best part is bringing people pure happiness and really fullfilling the doctrine of christ! bringing people into the fold of this gospel and making them live their lives similar to the way that jesus did. There is so much joy in this work.

5) Umm.. well considering i have only been in a room the cafeteria and the gym.. there isnt too many adventure buuut it is always really fun when we get to the apartment at night because we write in our journals and write letters and Elder Delgado and I have hand stand contests and so far I have  gotten 15 and he has 14 but we are getting better! also I played sand volleyball today for the first time which was a blast!

6) Almost everyone in my district is sick except for a couple people I am one of them and so is vanaquer!! woo hoo!! and my pinkie is completely healed there is just a big scar now it doesnt bother me or hurt at all anymore! I work out everyday and I have been mostly been in the weightroom I have been getting bigger and stronger! before i leave the MTC i will show you a picture! and how much muscle mass i gained.

7) umm.. me  gusta tacos! haha there are so many things to say! yo se que le restaurado evangelio de jesucristo es la une verdadero iglesia en la tierra! le libro de mormon es la palabra de dios! I dont know what you want me to say haha!

8) umm.. its cold! and i found the other 2 spanish elder that are going there! they are learning french here so i am the only one that doesnt fluently speak 2 languages haha but i will learn! I get no news or anything soooo.. not much i can especially with how  busy i am all the time.

9) Not sick. um, everything is just normal haha It is great i have never been happier in my laugh and i really like just being in a companionship as opposed to 3 i do love trio but it just seems to be alot more effective in a duo! I dont really miss too much and i am having loads of fun here! i only have 2 more thursdays and wednesdays in the MTC already that is crazy..

10) I have!! I have gotten more dear elders and packages than anyone in my district haha I love it thank you so much! It would be nice to get like 2 more things of that protien powder stuff you sent me.. I already used all of the other one and that one tastes pretty good! also could i possibly get like 3-4 more pairs of our black socks i will send them home before i leave but i only have 7 pairs and i use like 2 per day  soo.. doesnt really work well.. also I might have to give you more instructions but i have these 2 scarves.. they are in the blue package that i got during my open house and i forgot to take them.. you could send them to me here or at montreal.

11) not really any question i will probably think of some.. i forgot my camera in the dorms.. so you may not get any pictures this week so sorry!

12) the cold and actually teaching and the food and AAHHH so excited to get out of here haha

13) umm i know where they are but it might be cheaper just to send a regular box depending on what i send home. do you wand me to use the card to pay for it?

14) I think that is a really good solution and this way we will always have the house and it can be like "The" house because i love that house sooo much.. i think that is the best idea!

-- i spend 3 days writing dad this like 7 page letter so maybe this is why i needed to write this! i will be sending it today but id i do that then i cant send any others - yours and camdeyns and aidens will come soon too! Yeah i eat the same thing basically everyday.. so the food i am getting used to but there are ways to mix it up!

No there are 6 of us and i havent once forgotten my tag or my key card i have been pretty responsible there hasnt been anything weird like that yet except elders clog the toilets alot this is both funny and just nasty.

anyways that is it for this week love you

September 4, 2015 - "But as usual i am great i love it here and this is where i was meant to be", "I AM GREAT! As always I love it here I love the people and the environment i love being busy! always stuff to do in the MTC or CCM for spanish elder! always happy always smiling! Days are long though of course but its something you get used to.", Dallin H. Oaks devotional, pizza, reading BOM,

its beautiful here i am so excited for montreal! alright last photo love you

I AM GREAT! As always I love it here I love the people and the environment i love being busy! always stuff to do in the MTC or CCM for spanish elder! always happy always smiling! Days are long though of course but its something you get used to.
okay so

1. - my district is awesome! i love all of them i think i have a picture with everyone so i will send that to you! but there are 11 of us and we are all exact obedience missionaries we have lots of fun but we are also really good at learning and working as a team! I love our district there is 2 sisters and 9 elders. Next week though we will be getting another elder from our zone that has to stay an extra 2 weeks because he has weird transfer dates so when this happens my trio will be getting split up. To my knowledge I will be going with Vanaquer and Elder Hopkins will be Going with the other missionary whose name is elder hunt. Then we will be reunited in our trio for the last week of our adventure here. the sisters are going to mexico, 6 are going to barcelon/madrid spain, 1 to Jacksonville florida and 2 to quebec.

2- Everything makes me laugh! There are so many funny experiences with spanish and the investigators and trying to teach in a foreign language! We were doing a role play and the person was supposed to be a "hard" investigator.. Well we ended up just laughing for 5 minutes because the lesson just went so badly.. I don't think I have ever laughed so hard in my life - it was one of those "you had to be there moments"

3- The craziest thing? I dont know if I have a craziest thing haha.. everything here is chaotic but totally organized.. actually! no the craziest thing was when we had a devotional tuesday night where we have a guest speaker and it ended up being Dallin H. Oaks! that was super cool and at one point I totally could have  just ran and hugged him because he was so close to me. It was pretty sweet! he gave an amazing devotional that went to every MTC in the world and I was there to watch it! pretty sweet!

4 - I learn stuff every day.. so many things i memorize over 25 spanish words a day and like 10 verbs and 5 phrases. Along with trying to memorize scriptures I am constantly constantly studying so I learned more about my purpose and just how to teach better along with how I can improve on my language.

5- I really love everyone in our district! Elder hunt is a 4.0 gpa like me he is the district leader I can relate alot to him and he is really smart. His companion elder Pittman is from Idaho and he has the strongest testimony that you will ever see. Elder Delgado is a really funny tough guy from wyoming that rides bulls and he is super chill and its a blast working out with him we go hard. his companion elder chabot is one of my favorite people ever he is super funny and those two are becoming the zone leaders for the next 3 weeks but chabot always makes me laugh and he is smart and tall and we always mess with each other. Elder tutthill and elder stepp are another companionship - elder tutthill is my twin he studies just as much as i do if not more and he is also pretty reserved but he is also really smart as well he had language background with french and german so studying with him is super useful because we really compliment each others learning techniques. His companion is elder stepp and he is 19 he went to college for a year before he came out here and he is a very mature chill guy I like having discussions with him he is also a tough guy too from texas. then there are the two hermanas heremana lange went to college and she has the best spanish in the class. she knew some before she came out here though. She is also very smart. her companion hermana killborne is the same way both of them are really good at spanish and they are really kind.

Then of course there is my companionship - elder hopkins always makes me laugh he is the jokester of the class but he also has a really strong testimony of the gospel. He really adds pizzazz to the lives of the missionaries in our district - always makes us laugh and he lightens the mood. I cannot express How much i love both my companions! Elder vanaquer is such a cool elder! he is been to so many places around the world and he and I work super well together we are the exact same person! I love having talks with him! he is 20 and very mature and sometimes he is the only person that keeps me sane as well! he is super funny and he is a really good singer! and a really good dancer he knows how to teach he is good at the language I am so thankful for him! and Me? I am progressing in spanish really fast it comes really easy especially with the french I know - madame didnt just teach me french she taught me how to learn a language and I am so thankful for this I know how the language works and everything I can do to be fluent. I am always so " as long as its effective" and "foco" which means spanish in french I am really good at getting people back on track and I constantly remind everyone of our purpose I am a strictly obedient missionary!

6) I do! as much as i can be i mean there is always surprises but nothing here has really been too far from what I thought missionary life would be like! the language is easier than i thought it would be! the food is... well its the mtc food haha and its just a blast here I love it! Everything is so organized and you are so busy you dont really have time to think about what you might have done differently or how it doesnt match your expectations you just do it.

7 - ummm.. I dont know!.. the food here repeats alot soooo.. i am partial to say what is my favorite! buuuuuut every friday we get pizza so i am going to count that as my favorite! I love the order of things here 3 meals a day work out and 10 hours in the classroom.. that basically the schedule everyday!

8- again not too much different than i expected everything just seems so normal.. so familiar! already i love my tag! i have 5 of them 2 in spanish 1 in english and 2 in french I love them so much! i already feel weird without it.

9- alright anything well i will tell you about my week and everything that happend umm.. starting last sunday i really started reading the Book of mormon again and in one day i read about 150 pages! i never knew how much you could love the scriptures but i do! its the most amazing book you will ever read i wanted to jsut keep going until i finished it but obviously i didnt have time to do that. i started in 1st nephi and ended in mosiah!

umm so there was a devotional that day and not only did i lose 1 of my companions when we went to the movie devotional "thing" I lost both of them! so i just went into a trio with someone else in my district and all was well but it was just funny! everyone in my district is getting sick.. well actually everyone in the zone is sick I still have yet to get sick but i hope it doesnt happen i have been feeling fine but we will see! Oh you are supposed to prepare a talk and i took 45 minutes to prepare my talk then i forgot it in the classroom and you are assigned randomly.. oh yeah and it is all supposed to be in spanish so i wrote another talk in 5 minutes in spanish and i was ready to talk but it didnt happen.. buuuut! i know that i can write a talk in spanish rather quickly now! I think that is all for sunday

monday - oh actually backtrack to last friday! I have given 2 blessings here already and participated in like 10 the priesthood is amazing and it truly does work miracles! We gave an elder in our disctrict a blessing who just felt really really crappy and had the worste headache and as soon as we finished giving him a blessing his headache went away and he started feeling better. Just a cool story!
